We want Voluntary Assisted Dying in the NT - no excuses!

The NT was the first in the country to have a voluntary assisted dying (VAD) law in 1995, sometimes called voluntary euthanasia. But now it's the last. Every other Australian government has managed to pass a law, except the NT.

In 2022, the right to debate and pass VAD laws was returned to the NT and ACT. The ACT's law is done and dusted and will be available to Canberrans at the end of this year - but the NT's Chief Minister is dragging her heels.

It's only fair that Territorians have the same rights as other Australians.

Every day of inaction means more dying people are forced to suffer.

The work was done in 1995 and again in 2024 when an Expert Panel recommended the NT draft a law - so what is the Chief Minister waiting for?

Complete this form to quickly and easily send an email to the NT leader. It only takes 1 minute and will make VAD an issue she can't ignore.

Ask NT Chief Minister to make VAD a priority

NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro says a voluntary assisted dying law (VAD) is not a priority for her government. But dying people don't have time to wait.

Will you email the Chief Minister to ask her to start drafting a VAD law ASAP?

The Chief Minister's office says she hasn't received any emails about VAD since she came to power last year - but we know people like you care deeply about the issue.

Let your Chief Minister know what you, the voters, want. Your message will make a difference.

Top tips

  • Keep your message short and polite
  • Include your NT postcode (only emails from NT residents will matter to the Chief Minister)
  • Share your story of why VAD matters to you
  • Ask for a reply - they should respond to you.

Example email if you don't know what to write
Dear Chief Minister

You have let the NT fall behind the rest of the country on voluntary assisted dying. You say it's not your priority, but that's not good enough. Territorians want this right.

You're meant to represent Territorians, and we want our voices heard on VAD.

Please debate VAD in the NT ASAP - no more excuses, no more delays!

For dying people, 'not a priority' is an insult.
